Angelica -
(Angelica archangelica) A050X
Biennial 6' Part Sun–Shade
Hardy/Herbaceous White C,F,M,O
$5.75 |
|
A very large, graceful plant
with leaves, stems, seeds and roots having a delightful anise flavor. Candied angelica
stems are a famous treat. Flavors many liqueurs such as vermouth, chartreuse and
Benedictine. It was once believed that planting angelica on either side of a door
prevented evil from entering the house...it works for us! May live for several years if
you cut off the blooms before the seeds ripen. Native of damp meadows of N. Europe. Likes
slightly acidic, moist soil.

K.H. - Valley Cottage, NY
Aztec Sweet Herb -
Out of Stock
(Phyla scaberrima) A070
Perennial 1' Full Sun–Part Sun
Tender/Herbaceous White C,GC,M,O
$6.75 |
|
A fascinating herb from
Mexico! This plant has been used since the time of the Aztecs as an expectorant for colds
and coughs, and as a sweetener for teas. The leaves contain hernandulcin, an intensely
sweet compound 1000 times sweeter than sugar, but the high camphor content in the leaves
make them unsuitable as a sugar substitute. But you'll enjoy watching your friends taste
the incredibly sweet leaves. (For a great sugar substitute, see
Sugarleaf.)

Basil, African
Blue
(O. kilimandscharicum x O. b. 'Dark Opal') B010
Perennial 3' Full Sun Tender/Evergreen Pink C,F,O
$4.75 |
|
A perennial basil for year
round culinary use! Beautiful green leaves with purple veins. Excellent for rich tomato
sauces or over bruschetta. And we like tossing the blooms into a salad. Developed
by crossing camphor basil (O. kilimandscharicum) with purple basil (O.
purpurescens), it retains a hint of camphor, which is too strong for pesto, but
fine for any other recipe calling for basil. A great basil to grow in the winter in mild
climates.

Basil, East Indian
- Out
of Stock
(O. gratissimum) B025X
Perennial 5' Full Sun Tender/Deciduous White C,F,M,T
$5.75 |
|
A very unusual perennial basil
with a spicy clove scent and flavor! A robust grower, this basil has very large, slightly
fuzzy, light-green leaves. Our taste panel loves it on chicken and lamb. This
herb merits
culinary experimentation. Plant repels mosquitoes, and has been used internally to lower
fever, and relieve headache and impotence. Highly recommended!

Basil,
'Genovese' Sweet
(O. basilicum 'Genovese') B030X
Annual 3' Full Sun - White C,F
$4.75 |
|
One of the best all-purpose
basils we've found. From the Genoa area of Italy, Genovese has a spicy flavor that stands
up to the strongest tomato sauces. Also good for a stronger pesto. Relatively slow
to go to seed, yielding a longer season of large, dark-green leaves.

Basil, Lemon 'Mrs. Burns' - - Out
of Stock
(O. basilicum 'Mrs. Burns') B060X
Annual 3' Full Sun - White C,F
$4.75 |
|
The most lemony of all the lemon basils! One whiff and
youre in love...one taste and its forever. Especially good for fish. We like
to sprinkle lemon basil over tomato slices for a summer side dish. This is an heirloom
variety that has been growing in the south western U.S. for decades, and just recently
rediscovered. Beautiful, large leaves and intensely flavorful. Highly recommended!

|
Basil, 'Purple Ruffles'
(O. basilicum 'Purple Ruffles') B075X
Annual 2' Full Sun - Pink C,F,O
$4.75 |
|
An All-American winner. This
dark purple basil has large ruffled leaves. As beautiful as it is delicious. Many of our
customers plant it in their flower gardens for a pretty boarder.
|
|
Basil, Thai 'Siam Queen'
(Ocimum basilicum 'Siam Queen') B095X
Annual 2' Full Sun - Purple C,F,O
$4.75 |
|
The All-American Winner for
1997. A major improvement over the standard Thai basil. Larger leaves and later flowering
for higher yields. Deep red-purple flowers form in compact clusters, in contrast to other
basils flowering spikes. Outstanding flavor. Highly recommended!

Bay Laurel / Greek Bay
(Laurus nobilis) B100
Perennial 40' Full Sun–Part Sun
Tender/Evergreen Cream C,F,O $6.75 |
|
This is the true Greek bay
leaf used in fine cuisine, and an essential ingredient in bouquet garni. Slow
growing, but given the price of dried leaves in the markets, worth the wait. A beautiful,
graceful tree with a noble history. This tree is responsible for many common terms used
today. Laurus is from the Latin laus, "praise", referring to the
crown of bay leaves worn by victorious Romans, hence the phrase "Don't rest on your
laurels". The term "baccalaureate degree" comes from bacca laureus,
meaning "laurel berries", as ancient students wore the bay crowns during
examinations. Unmarried men are called "bachelors" because it was believed that
they were so absorbed in their scholarly pursuits that they had no time for amorous
pursuits. And the modern custom of decorating wedding cakes with silver leaves comes from
the Roman custom of hiding a bay leaf in wedding cakes. Grows well in pots and makes a
nice topiary. We don't know how anyone could be without a bay laurel tree!

Blackberry Lily / Leopard
Lily
(Belamcanda chinensis) B300X
Perennial 3' Full Sun Hardy/Herbaceous Orange-Red M,O
$6.75 |
|
Looking like a lily, this
Chinese medicinal herb (She-gan) has stunning orange and red blooms which look like
brilliant leopard skin. The blooms then develop into shiny black seed clusters which
resemble large blackberries. First mentioned in the Shen Nong Canon of Herbs, c.
AD25, this beautiful plant is an attention-getter in any garden.

Bloodwort
(Rumex sanguineus) B400
Perennial 2' Full Sun–Part Sun
Hardy/Herbaceous Beige C,DF,O
$7.50 |
|
| We're very happy to have
located a European source again for this wonderful plant. A very unusual and attractive
relative of sorrel. Bloodwort grows very similar to sorrel, but has less acidic, deep
green leaves with vivid, blood-red veins and stems! A beautiful and nutritious addition to
any salad, or it can be cooked like spinach. Bloom stalks used in dried flower
arrangements. A big attention-getter in our garden. Very rare! |
|
Borrachera /
Picurullana-quina
(Alternanthera lahmannii) B700
Perennial 5' Full Sun–Part Sun
Tender/Evergreen White M,O $25.00 |
|
An unusual plant from Latin
America used to alter the intoxicating effects of alcoholic drinks, is added to cocaine
tea by the natives, and also affects the voice. A beautiful plant with deep red stems and
leaves. The Colombian name, Borrachera, means intoxicant. Very rare.

|
Burnet, Salad
(Sanguisorba minor) B800
Perennial 1' Full Sun–Part Sun
Hardy/Evergreen White C,T $4.75 |
|
This pretty plant has a fresh,
pleasant cucumber-like flavor. We love to add it to salads, butters and cream cheese.
(It's a favorite cucumber substitute of ours because it doesn't make you burp!) Throw some
into a salad, and delight in your guests' bewilderment as to where the cucumber flavor is
coming from. Pretty, rounded, toothed leaflets. The name comes from the Latin sanguis,
"blood", and sorbere, "to soak up", given the use of burnet to
staunch bleeding. Readily self-sows.
